MobiloTopia

Besides bio-technology, mobile communication is now the prime technology that manages to spark utopian hopes. Mobile phones, 3G/UMTS, wireless networking, satellites, and even the good old radio, are the objects of desire for a media-savvy class which holds on to the idea that new media technoloigies can make you money, and might even enhance the democratic potentials of a globalised world - whether as Smart Mobs or as anti-WTO protesters. As a response, artists are exploring the emerging field of 'Locative Media' which combine the mobility of the device, with the fact that the mobile user can be tracked and located. 'MobiloTopia', the utopian site of mobile communication, is littered with locative media, the electronic bracelets of the immaterial class. Can it be turned in on itself, and can the hyper-sanitized, hyper-mediated, hyper-surveilled spaces of the Disneyfied city be contaminated with digital graffiti?
